The South Hill's August Rhythm: Two Anchors, A Weeknight Layer, And Where To Find Them

The South Hill's August Rhythm: Two Anchors, A Weeknight Layer, And Where To Find Them

If you live on the South Hill, you already know the neighborhood does not really need a summer festival to feel alive. What it needs is a good weeknight plan. This year, the calendar has quietly organized itself around two anchors, a Saturday one at Manito and a Thursday one on Perry Street, with a thin but interesting layer of food and drink filling the nights in between.

The thesis of what follows is small and useful: if you build your week around those two poles, you can spend most of August walking to something worth doing without ever opening a reservation app.

Saturdays belong to Duncan Lawn

The most consistent free thing on the calendar right now is the Manito Park Fitness Series. Sessions run every Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. through August 22, hosted on Duncan Lawn just east of the Duncan Garden, with instruction rotating among three local studios. River City Pilates, Shala Living Yoga, and The Union each take turns leading the hour. There is no sign-up and no cost, which is the part that changes the math. If you have been paying a monthly studio fee for a class you attend twice, six free Saturdays on the lawn is a real alternative through the end of summer.

A few things worth knowing before you go:

  • The lawn is a short walk from the Park Bench Café, which is where the Manito Under the Trees concert series has been staging its Friday evening sets, including a recent appearance by Dave Long.
  • Manito's other summer events cluster in the same corner of the park. Scoops and Bowls returned this July at the Lower Manito Picnic Shelter, and the PIA End of Summer Potluck lands at the Manito Splash Pad on August 2.
  • The park itself gives you five distinct gardens to walk after class. The Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden, Duncan Garden, Rose Hill, Lilac Garden and Ferris Perennial Garden are all within Manito's 78 acres of native and cultivated landscape and 20 acres of world class botanical gardens.

The practical point is that a Saturday morning on Duncan Lawn plugs into a park that already has coffee, shade, and a walking loop within a few hundred feet. You do not have to build the rest of the morning. It builds itself.

Thursdays belong to Perry Street

The other reliable anchor is the Perry Street Thursday Market. It runs Thursdays 3 to 7 p.m. May through October, and it has been operating in the South Perry District for more than two decades. The setup runs from the intersection of 10th and Perry, using the parking lot behind The Lantern and adjacent to Grant Park.

A few things distinguish it from the downtown farmers' markets:

The market accepts credit, debit, and EBT/SNAP, and participating vendors also take WIC and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program vouchers.

That matters if you are trying to make the market a real weekly grocery stop rather than a browse. Between the produce, the ready-to-eat food trucks, and the artisan tables, you can build most of a Thursday dinner without moving the car. Arriving between 3 and 4 p.m. gets you the fullest produce selection before the after-work crowd thickens the aisles at 5.

The market also sits inside a two-block food and drink cluster that is walkable on its own. Perry Street Brewing sits in the heart of the South Perry neighborhood with Northwest-style craft beer and Belgian offerings on the tap list. A block away, The Grain Shed operates as a brewery and a bakery using locally sourced Eastern Washington wheat. South Perry Lantern anchors the sit-down side of the district with a seasonal menu, and Wisconsinburger, The Shop, Française, Indicana, and Wellness Tree fill in the rest. If you skip the market itself, the same corner is where a resident's Thursday night tends to end up anyway.

The weeknights in between

The most useful addition to the South Hill food map this year is Anatolia Grill, a Turkish restaurant that opened in March at 2630 E. 29th Ave. in a former Pizza Hut. The owners, Ismail Topal and Segvan Bilen, opened in mid March and did not really expect the reception they got. The small space has four tables for dine-in, and food is served in takeout boxes whether you eat there or not. All the dishes are prepped and made from scratch daily.

Two details from the reporting are worth carrying with you:

  • The owners hope their next location will also be on the South Hill, which suggests the current 29th Avenue address is the smaller test kitchen, not the full expression of what they want to do.
  • The Turkish coffee at $3.50 and tea at $2.50 are served in a traditional tulip-shaped glass, and tea is poured continuously as a sign of hospitality.

A block of 29th Avenue that used to trade almost exclusively in chain lunches now has a made-from-scratch Turkish kitchen next to South Hill Grill's new-American menu at 57th. That is a meaningful shift in what a weeknight dinner within a five-minute drive of Manito actually looks like.

The other weeknight worth naming is Monday. The Grain Shed has become the neighborhood's Monday-night pizza spot, and it is the rare fixed weekly ritual on the South Hill that draws a crowd without being advertised as anything more than dinner. Between Grain Shed on Monday, Anatolia on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and Perry Street Brewing after the Thursday market, four of the five weeknights have a natural default.

What is coming to the Regal corridor

For residents living closer to the eastern edge of the South Hill, the Regal corridor is where the next round of change is queued up. Dutch Bros. Coffee has been announced for 4501 S. Regal, which puts a drive-thru specialty coffee option on a stretch of the neighborhood that has historically had to drive north or west for anything beyond a gas-station cup. It is a small addition, but it changes the morning geography for anyone whose commute already runs south of 44th.

A walkable week, this August

For the resident who wants to actually use this, here is the shape:

  1. Monday. Grain Shed for pizza, then a walk down Perry to see what is open late.
  2. Tuesday. Anatolia Grill on 29th. Order to-go if the four tables are full, and add the Turkish coffee.
  3. Wednesday. A quiet night, or the Manito loop from the Rose Hill parking area down through the Japanese Garden and back.
  4. Thursday. Perry Street Thursday Market from 3 to 4 p.m. for produce, dinner from a market food truck, and a pint at Perry Street Brewing after.
  5. Friday. Manito Under the Trees at the Park Bench Café for the evening set.
  6. Saturday. Duncan Lawn at 10 a.m. for the fitness series, coffee after, and a walk through the Ferris Perennial Garden while it is still in bloom.
  7. Sunday. Whatever the family wants. The point of the other six days is to make Sunday a real day off.

That is one week. There are five more Saturdays on the fitness calendar before it wraps on August 22, and about eleven more Thursdays on the market calendar before it closes in October. If you have been meaning to make the South Hill's summer work harder for you, this is the window where the calendar does most of the work for you.

If you are thinking further out and want a conversation about how the neighborhood's daily rhythm connects to what is happening in the local housing market, The Collection is happy to talk. Request a complimentary consultation and home valuation whenever the timing suits you.
